Over the past 5 years, I have had the pleasure of being a local Lansdale cat sitter for hundreds of homes. Part of our daily job is to scoop the litter boxes at every kitty home. I have had the opportunity to see / test / try almost every brand of litter at client’s homes and in my own home.
As I mentioned in my last article, when choosing a litter you must ask yourself what is most important to you. It is unlikely that you can find one kind of litter that does everything perfectly – so you end up having to sacrifice something. To me – clumping litter that is odor controlling and dust-free are the most important things. I would prefer if my litter didn’t track all over the house, but if I have to sacrifice something – its the tracking. I can easily sweep or vacuum.
I personally do not like any form of non-clumping litter. I want to be able to scoop out the pet excrement daily! I also cannot stand litter that is dusty. If every time I scoop the box, I walk away covered in a layer of litter dust – that is disgusting! I also do not want the freshly scooped litter to still retain the smell of pee and poo!
I have experimented by trying different litters in my own home. I found that any of the new “lightweight” litters (in any brand) are either very dusty or have no odor control. I thought the “Lightweight” would be easier to carry and it is – but that doesn’t make up for the smell or the dust! Lightweight litter does seem to track a bit less.
I’ve also found that most store-brand litters, or very cheap litters have little to no odor control. Many people become “nose-blind” to this and your whole home could smell like cat pee just because of the brand of your litter!
My favorite brand of litter is Dr. Elseys Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Litter. Its very cheap, it does great with odor control and has no dust whatsoever! It does track all over the house, but I also have a vacuum ready!
