There are a lot of types and brands of kitty litter on the market, how do you know which brand is best for your kitty?
If your kitty is allergic or has asthma, obviously you must use the litter recommended by your Vet. Otherwise, there are a lot of types of litter and brands that will work. But just because it “works” doesn’t mean that most don’t have their drawbacks! I have found my favorite type and brand of kitty litter by a lot of trial and error over the years. I’ve had experience with almost every type, from clumping to non-clumping, to pine, to newspaper shavings.
First, you might want to ask yourself some questions…
- How many cats do you have?
- How often do you scoop?
- How often do you want to completely change the litter?
- Do you want your cat to smell like the litter?
- Do you want your house to smell like the litterbox?
I want: to be able to scoop once daily for 2 cats. I want to only change the litter every few weeks or so. I want my cat to smell like cat not litter, and I want the litterbox to have no foul odor. I do not want to choke on a cloud of dust when I scoop.
Non-clumping litters generally have to be completely changed once a week, as they absorb the urine, rather than clump it. The litterbox will look awfully gross Litter made with corn kernels has a tendency to make your whole home have an odd odor. Scented litters can leave your cat smelling “mountain fresh”. Some litters put off a cloud of dust when you scoop them.
So after years of trying different litter, we have found that Tidy Cats works best to meet our needs. Its unscented, clumps well, and doesn’t leave your home stinky!
